Join EEAI for a virtual Teaching Climate Change

Environmental Education Course!


This online, asynchronous, course is designed to provide grades 4-12 formal and non-formal educators with an introduction to environmental education and the skills necessary to integrate climate change environmental education into their classrooms, homeschool classrooms, and programs. Participants receive climate education teaching materials designed for educators which explore climate connections to water, wildlife, and natural resources. This is an entirely online course that will be held through an online classroom called Moodle.  The course is broken down into 4 "Modules" on the online classroom and you will need to complete all 4 to complete the course.  Modules includes various tasks and assignments such as reading text, watching videos, sampling environmental education activities, etc.


By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify at least 5 best practices for teaching students about climate and climate change.
  • Summarize what people in Illinois and your community think about climate and climate change.
  • Identify at least two strategies from Teaching about Controversial Issues that you will use in your teaching.
  • Summarize important strategies for teaching about climate and climate change which encourage hope and optimism.
  • Engage in activities that lead to a greater knowledge and skills in implementing climate and climate change learning activities with students.
  • Engage in discussions and activities that model non-biased teaching approaches to climate and climate change, investigations, and decision-making (Integrating constructivist learning theory, whole language experience, service-learning, and sense of place) & develop strategies for integrating these approaches into their professional practice.
  • Participants will identify opportunities for integrating climate and climate change lesson plans into their instruction through the completion of a personalized instructional plan.


eeCourse Outline

  • Module 1: Introduction to Environmental Education, EEAI, Project Learning Tree, Project WILD, and Project WET
  • Module 2: Contextualizing Climate & Climate Change
  • Module 3a/3b: Experiencing Climate Learning Activities by Grade Bands
  • Module 4: Development of a Climate EE Teaching/Action Plan

You will have 6 weeks to complete the course materials and associated assignments. Everyone who completes the course will receive a certificate of completion and be eligible to use the course for future credit as part of the NAAEE eeCourse/eeCredential program
